MIM - Socio-Tech Information Systems Concentration

Requirements

The Socio-Tech Information Systems Concentration is intended for those students who want to follow the “CTO” (Chief Technology Officer) or director of technology development path.  This concentration is designed for professionals who require a basic understanding of management issues and who are actively involved in the actual development of applications or systems.

The Socio-Tech Information Systems concentration focuses on development and implementation of information systems, with a specific emphasis on systems that connect individuals, groups, and organizations by making use of contemporary information and communication technologies.

The requirements to achieve the MIM degree with a concentration in Socio-Tech Information Systems are:

a) Core courses (9 credits)
Three core Information Management (INFM) courses are required to be taken at the beginning of the program (among the first 18 credits of the program) since they are foundational:

  • INFM 600 Information Environments (3 credits)
  • INFM 603 Information Technology and Organizational Context (3 credits)
  • INFM 605 Users and Use Context (3 credits)

b) Specialized courses (15 credits)
The specialized required courses in the Socio-Tech Information Systems Concentration are divided in four groups: the Management, the information architecture, the advanced technology and the contextual technology courses

Management courses: One strategic management course is required in this concentration:

  • INFM 612 Management of Information Programs and Services (3 credits)

Information architecture course: One course in information architecture is required:

  • INFM FFF Information Architecture (3 credits)

Information technology courses: Two advanced information technology courses are required in this concentration and can be selected by the student:

  • INFM 718B Building the Human-Computer Interface (3 credits)
  • INFM 718N Web-enabled Databases (3 credits)
  • INFM 718R Information Retrieval Systems (3 credits)
  • INFM AAA Content Management Systems (3 credits)
  • INFM BBB Digital Multimedia Design and Development (3 credits)
  • INFM DDD Development of Internet Applications (3 credits)
  • INFM 741 Social Computing Technologies and Applications (3 credits)
  • LBSC 793 Database Design (3 credits)

Contextual technology courses: One contextual technology course is required in this concentration and can be selected by the student:

  • INFM 613 Systems Analysis and Planning (3 credits)
  • INFM 702 User Interaction with Information Systems (3 credits)
  • Communities of Practice - Online Communities (3 credits)
  • INFM 722 Copyright, Privacy and Security Issues in Digital Information (3 credits)
  • INFM GGG Organizational and Business Process Modeling (3 credits)

c) Applied courses (6 credits)
The Team Experience and Capstone projects are the required applied component in the program:

  • INFM 736 Information Management Team Experience (4 credits)
  • INFM 737 Solving Problems in Information Management (2 credits)

d) Elective courses (6 credits)
The remaining six credits (6) can be selected by the student:

  • Additional advanced technology course(s) (Preferable)
  • Additional contextual technology course(s) (Preferable)
  • Other INFM course(s)
  • Other LBSC (Library Science) course(s)
