Dr. Ann C. Weeks

(College Park, MD, 1/3/08) Dean Jennifer Preece is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Ann Carlson Weeks, Professor of the Practice, as Coordinator of the School Library Media Specialization at the College of Information Studies, University of Maryland. In addition to her appointment in the iSchool, Dr. Weeks is an affiliate of the University of Maryland Institute for Advanced Computer Studies.   

Dr. Weeks’ background in information services for children and youth at the local, national, and international levels is broad and deep. Prior to joining the College’s faculty in 2002, she was Director of Libraries and Information Services for the Chicago (IL) Public Schools (1996-2002). Other professional experience includes 10 years as Executive Director of the American Association of School Libraries, during which time she coordinated the National Library Power Program. She has served as Executive Director of the Young Adult Library Services Association and the Association for Library Services for Children and as a school library media specialist in New York and Indiana. In 2005, she was a Research Fellow at the International Youth Library in Munich, Germany.

She is currently Director for Collection Research/Use of the International Children’s Digital Library and travels widely to build and promote the ICDL. During the past year, she made presentations about the ICDL project, books, and reading at the Cairo Book Fair in Egypt; the Buenos Aires Book Fair in Argentina; the World Library and Information Congress in Durban, South Africa; and at the Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Dr. Weeks says, “I am delighted to be the Coordinator for the School Library Media Specialization, which has long been known for the excellence of its preparation program and the quality of its graduates.” She will work toward expanding course offerings, enhancing the accessibility of the specialization to individuals throughout the mid-Atlantic region, and strengthening networking opportunities among alumni and current students.
