Welcome to CLIS!

The College of Information Studies (CLIS) has been a leader in preparing information professionals for nearly four decades. We continue to build on that tradition, to forge new partnerships with related academic disciplines, and to maintain the program's leadership role in this rich, diverse and rapidly changing field.

This fall, we welcomed the largest entering class of MLS students in over a dozen years and a number of new PhD students. We also welcomed the first students in our innovative new management degree -- the Master of Information Management. Many of these students already have advanced degrees in other fields and considerable work experience. We are pleased that they have chosen CLIS as the place to pursue their degree in information studies. We look forward to working with them as they prepare for the exciting new library and information careers of the future.

The University of Maryland is located in the Washington, DC - Baltimore MD metropolitan area, a cosmopolitan center of cultural and intellectual activity and political power and influence. Because of its location, CLIS students have opportunities for study or work experience with agencies such as NASA, the Smithsonian, National Archives and Records Administration, Library of Congress, National Library of Medicine, and the National Agricultural Library.

CLIS intends to foster the development of the knowledge, skills, and abilities that information professionals will need for success in libraries, government, business, and other institutions in the 21st century. We invite you to explore our web site or to contact us for more information.
